Alison Bate is an experienced journalist and editor based in Vancouver, Canada.
She worked at The Vancouver Sun newspaper for nine years, and before that on papers in England, including freelancing on the nationals.
Her varied career includes delivering milk, writing reports on roundabout safety, teaching sailing and English, as well as editing two shipping magazines.
While sailing across the Pacific on a containership, Bate recorded and wrote an 11-minute radio documentary Sailing to Shanghai which aired on CBC Radio’s Outfront in 2005. Here’s a written account of that journey.
Her freelance writing has also appeared in The Globe and Mail, Reader’s Digest Canada, Canadian Geographic, BCBusiness magazine, Marine Digest, The Journal of Commerce, Maritime Magazine, and numerous international business publications, both online and print. A traveller at heart, she has taught English overseas in northwest China, Vietnam and in Sudan. Her published articles about Sudan include The Bint Formula: Following my grandfather’s footsteps (Reader’s Digest Canada, 2009); Teaching in the Muslim World (Transitions Abroad, 2008); and Bint el Sudan (Brownbook Magazine, Issue No. 49, 2015)
Bate has appeared as a panellist on freelance writing and moderator of a panel entitled The E-world: Online tips for writers. She is also a member of Pen Canada.
Online, she co-founded and ran a 100-page website for the BC Newspaper Awards for two years, and set up a blog for the Bowen Island writing festival.
