Thanks Alison for catching Haisla's Chief Councillor Ellis Ross' recount of the monster of Kitimaat. I grew up in Kitimat and have heard first hand the rich cultural stories of the Haisla. It's also important to note their observations of the eulachon returning since the pulp and paper mill left town. My familly have fished down the channel for 35 years and we have also noticed the return of the Humpback whales. Those reading, please share these stories with all your family and friends. The fjords and channels south of Kitimat are so biologically rich and important, the area needs time to bounce back and heal instead of being hit by the next layer of industrial development. Thanks for listening. Please act now.

Hi Chris

I’m glad you encouraged me to update this post, especially now the hearings have just started in Kitimat. Some risk assessments have been carried out and they’re pretty tedious to read, but I’ll try and do a new post within the next week or so, when I have more time.

However, from a quick scout around, the marine protection and emergency response plans are still a bit sketchy. Here's the link to Enbridge’s main Marine Risk Assessment summary:

Thanks Allison, I came across your article today while trying to get some back ground on this proposed project. Any updates? Conspicuously absent from this plan is any emergency response protocol.

Hi Jaihanne. Greetings from Vancouver to Khartoum and thanks for the kind comments. I was in Khartoum earlier this month and bought some Bint el Sudan from a little store in Souk Shabi. I got the non-alcoholic version (oil-based) version this time. Boy, is it strong!

Lovely article-I really did enjoy it. I never knew that the origins of this perfume came from East London. Your grandfather sounded like a very interesting man. I wish we had more people here in Khartoum, who used their initiative. Some do, but struggle to maintain it. I hope things change for us and that we are able to realise our dreams. This is a challenge, as Sudan is a conservative and fearful society. However, we need to take more risks and become part of 21st century:)

Hi Lubna

I loved Kassala: the coffee with ginger in it, the striking mountains, the souk and the friendliness of everyone there. Very relaxing and full of Sudanese honeymooners! As you know.

No wonder you miss it.

love Ali
